About Moosehead Canoes and Paddles

More and more paddlers are re-discovering the value of traditional canoeing equipment. There is just something about the classic designs, the beauty inherent in the construction techniques, and the historical association, that many find irresistible. Including us. Perhaps the majority of people who hear this siren call want to go further and acquire the skills for making some, or all, of their own equipment.

There can be no feeling quite like pushing off in a canoe that you have made yourself, with your own hand-carved paddle. This is probably as far as most of us will go towards the spirit of the native canoeists who could fashion their own equipment from the materials in the forests around them. If you choose to follow this path, the rewards are great, and canoeing for you will never be quite the same again; you will leave the mass-produced world behind you in your wake.

We started making wooden canoes, paddles and related equipment in 1991, and have built up our product range largely in response to an increasing number of enquiries about traditional canoeing equipment. Moving over to such equipment does not mean turning your back on performance; traditional canoes and paddles have evolved to a high degree of functionality, often through centuries of use.
